OUR PROPOSAL

Living in Stanley, you will be well aware of the different styles of street signs and the varying condition of many of them.

The purpose of the State Government grant is to upgrade Stanley’s street signage in a way that could enhance Stanley’s reputation as a visitor destination.

Example of proposed new street sign with

Highfield House wallpaper background

We have engaged a professional designer to recreate an 1840s wallpaper design that can be seen at Highfield House, and have used that as a background for new street sign designs that conform to the Australian street sign standards. The colour of the wallpaper has been changed to conform to the Australian Standards.

Three colours are proposed.

To add visual interest to the design, three heritage colours have been chosen.

Some examples are shown below:

Mauve:

for the remainder of the Stanley Street signs.

Brown:

for the scenic route around Dovecote Road

Green:

for the main tourist precinct (Church Street)

Colour variants

A new town boundary sign to replace the existing sign is also proposed. The proposed background colour is the same as the Dovecote Road sign. The typeface has been chosen to reflect the period Highfield Historic Site was established. It is a British-designed typeface called Clarendon that became popular in the early 1840s.

An interpretive sign explaining the wallpaper design has also been developed with the assistance of Dr Ian McFarlane, a locally based historian. The text has also been approved by the Circular Head Aboriginal Council. It is proposed a copy will be installed at the visitor centre and in Church Street (at a location to be decided).

Proposed interpretation panel

The Tourism Association has funding to complete all of the above.

We are also proposing, as a second stage, to install three 'information pods' around the town, ideally near the sandstone obelisks near the Jetty, the Cemetery and at the foot of the Nut walk.

The panel would be free standing, with a base designed by a local indigenous artist. The information on the panel would be as per the illustration above. A concept drawing is shown below. The Association will need to secure additional funding to complete this second stage.
